does anyone know what equipment was routinely carried in the buttstock compartment of the m1 in WWII, perhaps in the Pacific Campaign?

The equipment was basically identical during WWI and Korea and consisted of the M3 Combination Tool, a weighted cord pull-through to run a patch through the bore, a cleaning brush, a two compartment oiler (one section for oil and the other to hold the pull-through) and a small tube of PlastiLube (yellow), which was a grease-like substance and water resistant. Early oilers were made of nickel plated brass but with brass considered to be a strategic metal the switch was made to plastic. Early bore brushes were also brass but these were later changed to nylon for the same reason.
There were a variety of modifications and variations to the M3 Tool over the course of it's life and also at least three variations of the pull through: Brass, blued steel and parkerized steel, but the basic gear remained unchanged until after the Korean War.

Be aware that there are a LOT of cheap Chinese copies of the plastic oilers on the market which tend to be very brittle and if you fill them they will crack and then leak oil all over the place; like the interior of your stock [xx(]. There are also lots and lots of little plastic tubs filled with what is the typical green-gray grease. These are USGI but are Korean War issue. The yellow PlastiLube water resistant product is the only one correct for a WWII rifle.
