California certified handguns
Was looking at the certified handgun roster for California and was wondering and was wondering if only the stated barrel lengths are legal. For example the Rossi 461 listed on the roster is 2" but a 3" versions is also available. Would this mean that the 3" barrel version is not certified for possession in California.

First things first; the Roster of Handguns does not indicate a list of handguns which are legal in CA, the list only applies to those model which manufacturers have submitted for testing to the CA DOJ and which (once certified) CA dealers are allowed to sell at retail to non licensees. You can be in possession of a handgun not on the roster and in fact there are probably more handguns in CA not on the roster then there are listed handguns.
As far as barrel length is concerned; The DOJ certification exemption for what might otherwise be considered to be an "identical" variation of the same model pistol applies only in these cases:
(1) Finish, including, but not limited to, bluing, chrome-plating,
oiling, or engraving.
(2) The material from which the grips are made.
(3) The shape or texture of the grips, so long as the difference in
grip shape or texture does not in any way alter the dimensions,
material, linkage, or functioning of the magazine well, the barrel,
the chamber, or any of the components of the firing mechanism of the
firearm.
(4) Any other purely cosmetic feature that does not in any way alter
the dimensions, material, linkage, or functioning of the magazine
well, the barrel, the chamber, or any of the components of the
firing mechanism of the firearm.
A modification which alters the handguns dimensions is specifically prohibited and in the case of a pistol which is available in a variety of barrel lengths; an example with each barrel length must be certified.0 -
