Antique 3 Line Rifle (Mosin Nagant)

I've been told that many of the hex receiver Mosin Nagants were actually made in the early 1890's and that this makes them legally antiques and legal to ship direct to individuals.

The problem I see with this is there's much later date on the barrel shank and the rifle must be disassembled to find the date the receiver was made.

Obviously the easy solution is use an FFL or C&R but I can get higher bids on my gun if I can ship direct.

Is it true that the hidden date on the receiver is what legally qualifies the gun as an antique according to the ATF?

  Do not claim to be expert on these. A SMALL number (not many, but a small number) were made 1891-1893 that can be verified by a hex receiver, and a plugged threaded hole in the receiver where the barrel screws in. THOSE are antiques as defined by Title 18 US Code section 922, and can be shipped directly (as far as the Feds are concerned)
  
  This link shows the EIGHTEEN known variations of the receivers of these. Do not know that you will find a seperate date stamp, but the age of the receiver IS what determines antique status.

  YES!
  Some of the Finn captured Mosin 91's and 91/30's were re-arsenaled into M-39's as late as the 1960's, and if the tang stamp is 1898 or older, they are "Antiques", no matter what the barrel date says.
  But I told you this before trying to help you not get hosed on the sale, so if you still doubt me, call the ATF and ask them, or see what http://www.gunsnammo.com/ lists as antiques, and check the barrel dates in the pics.
