rear sight 8mm mauser
how do i adjust the rear sight on a 8mm mauser it seems to me if you slige it forward to raise the sight then you must raise the barrel of the gun for the sight to line up but then your target is out of sight..... I don't get it

The rear sight of your mauser is a scaled down parabolic curve of the 8mm bullet trajectory flight path. As you slide the rear sight bar it follows the parabolic curve and raises the rear sight to match the trajectory at the meters marked on the bar/beam. Thus requiring you to raise the front sight( tilt the barrel upward) to compensate for bullet drop. All open sights rely on this principal. The rear sight elevates for longer distance shooting. Moving the front sight results in the opposite effect.
Remove your mauser bolt, support the rifle on sand bags, and view down the bore (bullet flight path) at a distant object. Now without disturbing the rifles position look through the sights at different settings and get a feel for the relationship between line of sights and the bullet's flight path.
As mentioned most mausers with the rear sight in its lowest position will shoot a bit high at 100 yds. You can hold under a bit or try a different load.0 -
Tinman, a minor misconception on your part. If you raise the rear sight, you do NOT raise the muzzle to reacquire your sight picture. You lower the REAR of the gun, while still MAINTAINING the front sight on your target. Your target will not be obscurred because you lowered the rear of the gun instead of raising the front. Lowering the rear of the gun will increase the elevation of the trajectory and result in a higher point of impact. [:)] 0 -

You raise the rear sight by pressing the two small spring-loaded tabs on the side and sliding it forward.
Sliding the sight forward raises the rear sight on its little ramp. If you want to maintain the same sight picture as before you'll have to tilt the barrel up VERY slightly so that the rear and front sights line up again, exactly as before.
You'll also have to VERY slightly adjust your cheekrest on the gun so that your shooting eye lines up with the now slightly elevated rear sight. (I think this is the "secret" that's being omitted here. . .one way to do this is to slightly elevate the stock on your shoulder, but depending on your anatomy and fit to the gun, you likely won't have to).
Note that the rear sight only goes up a fraction of an inch, so the amount you need to tilt the gun, and the change in your cheekrest are very small, effectively imperceptible to you. Again, the sight picture will appear the same to you, and so will the target.
In any case, with the same sight picture, but with a slightly upwards-tilting barrel, the point of impact will be higher. That will let you compensate for a longer shooting distance.0
