buying a gun from another country

there's a gun i want, but its in england how can i get it and how much would it cost.

    Whether or not you can import it depends upon what kind of gun it is. The cost will vary from a few hundred $ to several hundred $, only an approximation is possible.

    EDIT: It may be possible for a nonlicensee to import a sporting C&R or antique without using an importer. But, I'm guessing that the OP has in mind some kind of milsurp, maybe an AK-47.

    To add to what Neal said, you will need to find a firearms importer. This is a seperate class FFL from Dealer.

    This is where I always have to be the mean guy. Tell us exactly what kind of gun (make and model) it is and we can tell you if it is even importable. Once that is determined we can tell you how to proceed.

    its not actually one gun its one or two out out of a few all of which are early 1900s semi auto shotguns they all cost around $1000

    In theory you can fill out an ATF Form 6 on your own and if approved (it might take several months) import the guns on your own. The results of dong this way have been mixed and the application is often denied or delayed for so long that most guys give up. Any Type 01 FFL Deal can import a few guns every year so you might find one willing to do it for you...But most won't bother. The final option is using a Licensed Importer (Type 08 FFL). Typical charges are $200 per gun plus shipping and related charges (bonded warehouse, stamping their markings on teh gun, ect.).

    basically, what mark said. any FFL can import now and then, if they're willing to do the paperwork each time. the time for approval for an FFL is 2-6 weeks. the importer is required to mark the gun with their individual mark, to show it's been legally imported. if your FFL is willing to do this, figure around $300 for the first gun.
    there are importers, as mark mentioned, that charge $200 plush shipping per gun.
    sporting guns are legal to import here. so your hunting and competition long guns and pistols
    are ok.
    short barreled pistols can be tricky. i imported a 4" revolver, but was denied a permit for a 2 1/2" snubbie.
