A short action would be a rifle action that handles a caliber of .308 and smaller in case length. A long action would be any caliber with a case length longer than a 308. A 30.06, 7mm mag and so on would be considered a long action. So if you wanted a short action rifle a .223 or 7mm-08 or a 308 that would be a good place to start. There are many others but these are the more popular ones. I have a Savage 111 in 7mm-08 but it is the older long action version. Savage did manage to change this and know their 7mm-08's are on a short action.

At one time, Savage made a "short action" for the 22/250 and 243 sized rounds. Then they went through a period of a standardized length and used the full sized 110 action but used fillers in the mag box and different boltstops to adjust the bolt throw. After so many buyers went to other brands for shorter & lighter actions Savage developed the present 10 series. IMHO the 10 series is still too big and heavy for the smaller 223 class but they sell a lot of them so maybe I'm wrong.
The Choate stock should fit any 10,11,12,or 14 action made within the last 20 years barring a conflict with the newer trigger mechanism. Feel free to correct me if this info is incorrect.
