Rubbing Alcohol 4 bore cleaning?
Hi guys. I used 91% rubbing alcohol to clean off the license plate on my car so that I could put my decal on it, and the alcohol darn near took off all the paint on my license plate. Which made me wonder if perhaps this stuff might make a good bore cleaner. Anybody ever use it for that?

Isopropyl in contractions above 90% will work fine but make sure to oil the metal after you've cleaned it because it will have been completely stripped of any protection. Typical rubbing alcohol is 70% with the remainder being water so it makes for a fairly diluted cleaner but would be great for black powder or corrosive primers. I've talked to guys who served in Vietnam who've told me that they would often use little alcohol prep-pads in place of cleaning patches, which never seemed to be around when they needed them. Obviously some alcohols like methanol are extremely corrosive and should not be used with firearms. 0 -

Alcohols are polar organic solvents.
They're excellent at taking off CERTAIN things (ie things that are soluble in alcohol), and for cleaning gun barrels they should work better than say, pure water.
On the other hand, alcohols should not work nearly as well for getting out carbon and powder residue as a product designed for that purpose.0 -
You should also know that alcohol will remove some stock finishes like French polish. It will take it right down to bare wood in seconds. 0
