My Grandpa's gun
Ahoy there.
My father passed down my Granpa's Winchester Model 97 12 GA. pump shotgun to me. It came in the original canvas carrying case and also includes the original wooden cleaning rods. The serial # is E 609643, it's never been re-finished, the action still works smoothly and I'd have no problem going out into the field and taking down a variety of feathered foes like my Grandpa used to do. Have no intention of ever getting rid of it but was just curious as to the value of it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Without seeing pictures of it I have to go by what the auction side is bringing.....which is upto $500

Your granddad's Winchester Model 1897 12-gauge was probably made in 1916.
The gun was available in 12-gauge and 16-gauge. Aside from the guns built for military or police use, the shortest barrel available was 30" The CAS shooters cut them down to from 18" to 20".
The gun was built in two variations: The take-down version is the more common. There is a solid-frame version as well. Yours being an "E" series gun means that it has all the updated (but minor) design changes that the gun experienced. The last Model '97 was made in 1957.
These guns have experienced a Renaissance, since they are one of the weapons (or its modern reproduction) approved for Cowboy Action Shooting competition.
Prior to the CAS demand for them, they were not bringing very much. Today, a '97 in good shooting condition, but showing its age, will sell for between $350 and $450. If your gun is in significantly better than average shooting condition, it could bring more and as such, depending on the condition of the gun and the accesories you say it has, it could be worth the $500 that was suggested, or perhaps a bit more. But, the gun's condition will drive the price and there may or may not be a demand for the case and wood rod.0 -
