handgun shipping 2
Previous line is about to be locked. so!
What about shipping handguns to a gun smith?
I have a 83-84 High Standard.. Steel Sentinel with rubber mustang grips marked 22 cal( not MK 1 or MK 4 it came with both cyl) I am rebuilding.
Refinishing and new cylinders. While i can do a lot of gun smith stuff.
I think it would be a better ideal to get a real smith to check the timing on the new assembly's.
And perhaps a brush up/ tune up trigger job as i plan to get the trigger and hammer chromed as well.
I got burned on this gun in the mid 80's, some one shot 22lr in the mag cyl and you had to dig out 3 hulls but a nice shooter.
I don't know of a good gunsmith in south MS, there may be a few but i don't know any and none that owe me a favor.
I could use recommendations on possibility's as well as the shipping there of.
thanks

Yes, as long as he has a gunsmithing FFL. 0 -
You can ship it to him via UPS or FedEx using only his FFL but as a non licensee you cannot mail it to him unless he holds a Type 07 FFL (Manufacturer of Firearms). One of the very narrow exceptions in the Postal regulations allows for the mailing of firearms to manufacturers but in that situation the recipient must hold the proper Type 07 FFL as a named manufacturer. 0 -
Thanks
And FedEx or UPS is over night only? 30.00 x2 +
I recently saw a forum talking about 455's that had there cyl cut for 45 acp's and repairing them back to 455's.
Lots of shipping of cyl and pistols both ways but no mention of restrictions.
Now to find a High Standard gunsmith who is good and cheap.
Edit 1 Back in the old days USPS was all there was.
These days I don't care for USPS's tracking system, or lack there of.
Sure I ship that way but something precious to ME, its UPS or Fedex.
That was never the question.
I wasn't talking about selling a gun.
I never thought of a Gunsmith as a FFL, Duhh
This is a great place to ask such questions.

You will find one or the other, but not both.0 -

Where is this exception?

quote:12.1.2 Handguns
Pistols, revolvers, and other firearms capable of being concealed on the person (referred to as handguns) are nonmailable unless mailed between the parties listed in 12.1.3 and 12.1.5 after the filing of an affidavit or statement required by 12.1.4 and 12.1.6.
12.1.3 Authorized Persons
Subject to 12.1.4, handguns may be mailed by a licensed manufacturer of firearms, a licensed dealer of firearms, or an authorized agent of the federal government or the government of a state, territory, or district, only when addressed to a person in one of the following categories for use in the person's official duties:
a. Officers of the Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Organized Reserve Corps.
b. Officers of the National Guard or militia of a state, territory, or district.
c. Officers of the United States or of a state, territory, or district, whose official duty is to serve warrants of arrest or commitment.
d. USPS employees authorized by the Chief Postal Inspector.
e. Officers and employees of enforcement agencies of the United States.
f. Watchmen engaged in guarding the property of the United States, a state, territory, or district.
g. Purchasing agent or other designated member of agencies employing officers and employees included in 12.1.3c. through 12.1.3e.
12.1.4 Affidavit of Addressee
Any person proposing to mail a handgun under 12.1.3 must file with the postmaster, at the time of mailing, an affidavit signed by the addressee setting forth that the addressee is qualified to receive the firearm under a particular category of 12.1.3a. through 12.1.3g, and that the firearm is intended for the addressee's official use. The affidavit must also bear a certificate stating that the firearm is for the official duty use of the addressee, signed by one of the following, as appropriate:
a. For officers of Armed Forces, by the commanding officer.
b. For officers and employees of enforcement agencies, by the head of the agency employing the addressee to perform the official duty with which the firearm is to be used.
c. For watchmen, by the chief clerk of the department, bureau, or independent branch of the government of the United States, the state, the territory, or the district by which the watchman is employed.
d. For the purchasing agent or other designated member of enforcement agencies, by the head of such agency, that the firearm is to be used by an officer or employee included in 12.1.3c. through 12.1.3e., Authorized Persons.
12.1.5 Manufacturers and Dealers
Handguns may also be mailed between licensed manufacturers of firearms and licensed dealers of firearms in customary trade shipments, or for repairing or replacing parts.
12.1.5 only permits dealers and manufacturers to mail handguns for trade shipments or repairing or replacing parts.....no one else.0 -
I would appreciate seeing that exception as well. It's always been my understanding that under no circumstances can a non-licensee mail a handgun through USPS regardless of any type of FFL held by the recipient. 0 -
I thought it was in there but I don't see it.
Note to MMMarvis: DO NOT mail the handgun to a manufacturer, ship it UPS of FedEx.0 -
Some manufacturers & distributors have contracts with Fedex or UPS that allow them to send & receive handguns by 2nd Day Air at a greatly reduced cost. Generally, for a nonlicensee to send the handgun, the factory/distributor will issue a pickup ticket.
Always call first to see what the recipient can do for you.
