22-250 using mauser receiver ??

Hi Gents...

I've been reading a lot about 22-250 that are built w/Mauser receivers, but the details are sparce. Can ya'll point me in the right direction here at GB forums where I might find someone who knows what type modifications concerning bolt/bolt head I can expect. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated...

  There should be no need for any bolt face alterations. Good to go as is.

  22-250 has the standard rim size of .473. It can function with any standard bolt that is used with the .308 family of cartridges. It's such a popular varmint cartridge that almost every manufacturer makes a rifle chambered for it.

  The bolt face is not the problem as long as the original chamber used the .0473" rim.
  
  The .22-250 cartridge is shorter and has more body taper than most original Mauser cartridges. This creates problems with the the magazine box and follower which require some significant changes in order to get the cartridges to feed consistently. After this is done, the feed ramp will need some attention as well. Be aware that there will be amateurs who will tell you that all they did was screw on a .22-250 and go shooting. To have a rifle feed and function properly, requires some work, not just screwing some parts together.
  
  There might be some magazine parts and followers at Numerich Arms, otherwise try the Gunbroker 'Want Ads' forum. Or check with a trained gunsmith with the background to work on Mausers.

  There is nothing that states that you can't just throw some parts together and get a rifle to function basically. However, in most cases, a careful examination of the feeding and function of the cartridge often calls for some 'massaging' of the magazine, rails and feed ramp in order to gain some optimal feeding characteristics.
  
  This is a simple example of what I was discussing:
  
  
  
  This modification entailed making a bent metal spacer which is attached to the magazine box. Then we made a follower and modified an existing spring to work with the follower in the space allowed.
  
  Once this was complete, we worked on the underside of the rails and the ramp to optimize the feeding.
  
  In other situations though, we made an all new magazine and bottom metal because of the nature of the rifle. Quality often dictates function and features.

  My gunsmith says when he was doing stuff like that, he never worked on the magazine. A .22-250 was a target and varmint rifle and single shot was fine.

  FWTW I've built several .22/250's on Husqvarna m-38 actions and they fed just fine with no alterations. I would think the yugo m-48 action would work well also, but I haven't done this.

  the average problem using a'98 Mauser action for conversion to cartridges like the 22/250, 250 Savage, is there is usually some feed rail/magazine follower fitting/modification that has to be done. IF you can do this yourself it can be cost effective to use these actions. IF you have to send the gun out to have SOMEONE ELSE do this work then it is usually cheaper to buy a rifle that is set up for this cartridge from the start.

  Save yourself from dealing with headaches and just get a single round target follower. No feeding issues and it will slow you down from burning through all your ammo when you get out to a prairie dog town.

  Push comes to shove, you can locate an original Mauser Kurz action rifle in .250-300 Savage then switch out the barrel. The rifles are running about 8,000 - 10,000 right now if you can locate an owner who is willing to sell.
