handgun shipping

Can anyone enlighten me on the confusing handgun shipping laws?? How do I as an unlicensed individual ship a modern handgun to an FFL holder? It is my understanding that neither UPS or the postal service will accept shipment from an unlicensed individual. Furthermore, what if the handgun is an antique, any changes???

    i heard that if you don't have a license the only way to ship a modern handgun is Fedex Overnight, is this true.

    Nope, you can use UPS also, but it is going to be VERY expensive for either FedEx or UPS. The way to do it is get a transfer dealer for cheap and ship it priority mail. Even if the transfer dealer costs $40.00-50.00, you will still save as the shipping will only be about $15.00-20.00, versus $80.00-90.00.

    UPS & Fedex require that you ship handguns Next Day Air OR Next Day Airsaver.

    You must ship from a company customer counter (hub), not a UPS Store, not a Kinko's.

    You must inform them that the package contains a firearm. (You should ensure that this is noted on your receipt.)

    You must ship Adult Signature Required.

    but if you are shipping from FFL to FFL (either 01FFL or 03FFL) you can simply ship it USPS Prority, right?

    You are right. FFL Dealers can ship via U S Postal Service.

    No, only 01 FFL to 01 FFL; by USPS regulations, an 03 FFL is NOT a dealer.

    I only report, I don't write this stuff.

    Dealer/dealer (Type 01 to Type 01) only for mailing handguns, although there are a few very narrow exceptions which don't apply to 99% of the people you are ever likely to meet as well as for manufacturers and importers. C&R holders (Type 03 FFL) are not by definition dealers and cannot use the US Mail for mailing handguns.

    Neal and Mark (up there ^^^) are correct. Only an 01 Dealer or a MANUFACTURER can use US Mail to send a handgun. When the Postal Service wrote their regs, they did not know there was such a thing as a licensed collector, and they left us out.

    They did not actually forget about you folks, they just predated you by about two decades! The Postal restrictions on mailing handguns between dealers, manufacturers and a few others dates back to 1949 while the Type 03 FFL (Curio and Relics License) did not exist until the Gun Control Act of 1968.

    FedEx changed their firearms policy over a year ago and now allow firearms (including handgun) shipments from any FedEx Office (formerly Kinkos) location.http://fedex.com/us/service-guide/terms/index.html
