Pistolets Automatiques Unique question

Recently acquired this Unique .22 pistol and the slide will not pull back far enough to pick up a cartridge. Instructions are in French not much help there. Although I have field stripped the pistol and reassembled it ... Same problem ... Any idea as to why? Thanks

  I owned a standard model years ago, it worked fine with .22 LR. Yours with the long barrel and comp MIGHT be for .22 short not LR. They used that cartridge in Europe for one of their shooting disciplines, with the turning targets that were only visible for seconds.
