Bauer 25 semi
Anyone know if these are reliable (unlike the Davis & Jennings) junk?
I could use something small for carry in the summer. I do know that the caliber is far from preferred for defense and it isn't going to be accurate.

Your setting yourself up for a fail, Bauer and the guns they made have been out of business for over 25 years. Go with a KelTec P 3AT or something similar from S & W or Ruger. The Bauer .25 was a US made replica of of the .25 Baby Browning only made out of stainless steel. It probably has more value as a collectors item nowadays because of this, then as a functioning personal protection handgun. 0 -
Regarding your first question, they are very well made and far better quality than a Davis or Jennings. I was given one as a gift when they were new, fired it quite a bit for fun, and don't recall it ever malfunctioning. 0 -
Don't depend on the Bauer. It is made of supposedly better material than the Jennings, but the frames have a tendency to crack. When they do, they are done, there is no fix. They are a cheap copy of the Baby Browning, but only made of stainless. They are neither reliable, nor accurate enough for self defence. That is the word from experience...had two, the first was new, and the second was a factory replacement...they both cracked, and would not reliably feed.

Guess I was lucky, or quality later declined. I believe there were Bauer family problems that broke up the company in 1980s.0 -
I had one that I carried as a second back-up on patrol. It never failed on me. Have to recognize that it is a very close range weapon (fire-fight in a phone booth, close). I used the old WW with the little ball bearing in the nose as it was the only thing that had any chance of expanding and would feed in the pistol I had. It is still soldiering on with a supervisor at the D.A.s investigations section. 0 -
The Bauer was made in small batches by a machine shop, & quality varied.
However, ALL have a fatal design flaw: the left sear pin recess in the frame was drilled incorrectly, & the sear pin can potentially drop out of position at any time. When this happens, the gun becomes inoperative.

This is a pistol that I would steer clear of in a self defence situation. I had a Bauer .25 and it looked good and it also worked just fine, but not all of those little guns did in fact work so well. The Bauer was well made and not cheap junk like the Davis, Bryco, Jennings, ect. However, well made does not always indicate flawless functioning. If you are going to go with a .25 I'd be looking at a Beretta Model 21, or a Bernardelli, or an actual Browning product and not the Bauer. 0 -
Thanks guys. Found a Bauer for $75 out the door. I'll probably pass on it, even if just for a plinker.

For $75, I would grab it in a New York second, if it's factory original and in at least V.G. condition. You would always come out ahead at that price for resale, or to use in trading.0 -

To my knowledge Bauer only made these pistols out of investment cast stainless.
Also, these weren't an actual clone of the Baby Browning, but a close copy. Very small differences, but it still had differences.0 -
