I have 2 second gen.38 special SAA both 1956 one 5&71/2 and one 7&1/2 both of course black box I show black box up to 38500 then stage coach box but this may be a few months before the actual change over , I suspect they used up the available stock and shipped some calibers with one box and other calibers with different box even the same day. Colt Never threw any boxes away. as to the stag grips only a colt letter could provide that information.

EDIT could be either way . spend the money for the colt letter, money well spent and only way a collector will pay top price if you ever sell . Price of getting a letter will go up faster then value of pistol so NOW is the time to get the letter just my $.02.

    thanks perry for your info,

EDIT: found some previous info, that the 38 is not really desirable and not in demand as much as 45LC, in other words, 38's do not sell as quicky as 45LC and other calibers. what would be a decent price on auction for a piece like this, but as a shooter this changes things as Colt letters are quite $$ but worth spending. I dont think auctioneer would let me take a grip off to check, lets just say I hope there are extra set of grips in that box that last 3 numbers match s/n thanks

    EDIT:[:)][:)][:)]
that display box that is pictured with pistol is what I think is the NRA centennial display box with coin, 1971 first 100 years, but that makes it 15-16 years after prod of 38 with black and gold box,

As always, Perry has given excellend advice. from the picture links you have provided, I would assume that has been fired. If those stag grips are real stag, and original equipment, then that raises the value a notch or two. Not quite like genuine factory ivory would, but enough. It is a very nice example, and should also be an excellent shooter.

I love the 38 special SAA make great cowboy action guns You dont need 45 LC to ding a gong. and the 357 Marlin rifle with 38 specials make for cheap ammo low recoil WHATS NOT TO LIKE
