38 long Colt Vs. 38 S&W
I have inherited a 38 long Colt. My question is it O.K. to shoot 38 S&W ammo in 38 long Colt . The 38 long Colt is in good condition .

38 S&W will not fit in a long colt cylinder they are to fat. 38 special shouldn't fit and if they do, do not shoot them either they are higher pressure. Some of the guns made for long colt were not very strong the the 38 special has quite a bit more pressure. Conversly you can shoot the long colt in a 39 special chambered gun. 0 -

As mentioned below, you should not be able to do this.
If you want to shoot the gun you have two options available.
-Commercially loaded .38 long colt rounds ARE still available. They're not cheap, but they're not prohibitively expensive either:

I think nominally the .38LC uses .361" diameter bullets, while at least some of the modern loads probably use .357" diameter bullets. So you might not get match-level accuracy with some of these loads.
-Load your own much cheaper. If you reload, you can use any bullets you like, obviously.

.38LC/short Colt dies are readily available.
I don't know if you can get away with ordinary .38 special dies, but that might be possible depending on your setup and which dies you have. You also might be able to create your own .38L brass just by trimming down .38 special brass, though given the low cost and ready availability of new .38LC, this may not be worth the effort.0 -
