Demand is what creates value, not rarity. Times are tough now for lots of folks with the economy, foreclosures, gas etc. Put it on the the auction with a base price that you can live with. Hoping 2 or more bidders will want it enough to start competing with each other for it, thats what will drive the price up. I would check the markings on your pistol for positive identification. S & W has made a high dollar target pistol known as the 952, the 552 on the other hand draws a blank as far as my references are concerned.

EDIT #1, 559's are common first generation high cap 9mm pistols, made by S & W in the 70's/80's time frame. Nothing wrong with them, descent guns, unfortunately not big buck collectors items. Used, factory original, excellent condition, your probably looking at $250-$400 price range.

EDIT #2, Disregard the above, the 559 is the blue steel frame version of the 59. Not common at all, lot more of the 459's and 659's were made and sold. If it's factory original and in excellent condition, a knowledgeable S & W collector would probably go at least $500, maybe more for it.

Are you are sure it is not a 952 [?]
    S&W never made a 552 that I can find.
Post some good close up pictures of it for help.
    If it's a revolver it would be a 547 or 940.

It could be common.........or it could be rare; I just can't see from here. We're not going to play "20 questions" with you; if you want good information, you will have to post photos.
