Broomhandle Model 1930 Won't Come Apart
What is the trick? I have disassembled dozens of Brooms since 1962! I have the mag follower and spring out. I have the hammer cocked and the safety in the firing position. I have the take down latch fully depressed. The inner assembly just won't budge! The gun is a really nice original that I just got for myself. Very minty. Don't want to force it or scratch it. Is there something about the 1930 that is different? I have tried with the safety on or off and with the bolt in the gun and removed. Nothing?

HeDog? Got any ideas? 0 -
Soak it in Kroil. After soaking, very lightly tap it with a plastic hammer. Hopefully your only problem is congealed grease that has set up over the years.
EDIT #1, If you do decide to use Kroil, don't do it in the house. It's foul smelling toxic stuff. Soak the parts outside in a closed container. Used disposable gloves and eye protection to protect yourself from the Kroil splattering.0 -
Well I appreciatte that advice. But I am very familiar with that situation and how it feels. I have soaked oil and breakfree into the action and did tap on it with a leather hammer as hard as I dare. It just feels like something is jammed inside, solid. I don't want to hit it too hard and make things worse. I am hoping that this has happened to someone else and that it is a known problem. The pisol functions and feels just great, so I hope nothing is broke inside. How hard should I hit it? 0 -

It's been awhile since I last took a BH apart. All the internal parts snapped together with a interference fit. The only screws held the wooden grips on. Congealed oil and grease would really do a number, on tight fitting parts like that. After massaging it with the plastic hammer, you might try heating it with a hair dryer or some other flameless heat source.0 -
CJS10, I've had a C96 for quite awhile myself, the other day I was looking through the 2nd edition of FIREARMS ASSEMBLY / DISASSEMBLY PART I AUTOMATIC PISTOLS By J.B. Wood. And in the reassembly tips for the 1896 Mr. Wood states "When replacing the rocker coupling, note that its "hook" must be pointed foward. Unfortunately, it is possiable to install the rocker coupling backwards, with disastrous results. When this is done the pistol can be put back together, but the nose of the coupling will lock on the front of the trigger/floorplate latch spring and no amount of force will disassemble it again. Special tools will be required."
I hope the last person to reassemble it didn't do this. But every one I have taken apart pretty much falls apart like a puzzle. Hope this is some help0 -
Well 3855 thanks for that info about the backwards rocker. That is what it feels like, the inner action parts and outer frame parts are very solid and will not move apart like normal. But again the slide can be removed from the gun. The slide and mainspring and firing pin will disassemble normally and go back into the gun just fine. The gun's action cycles and feels like it is all normal inside. Magazine parts all come out fine too. Trigger function, hammer and safety all work great. There is no dried up grease everywhere like I sometimes see on old guns. I am sure someone was shooting it! This is a near mint original blue Model 1930 and every thing moves just right, snick, snick, click, click so to speak. So maybe it is something else, maybe a big burr on the take down latch from forcing it closed? I wonder what the special tool is? Is the next step a Broomhandle specialist gunsmith? Wish I knew one. I just purchased the gun locally and I think I can return it. I demanded a guarantee that it is matching inside! So if it can't be disassembled........... 0 -

Seller will probably tell you he can get the gun apart (doesn't want to lose the sale)..but I'll bet you will have to leave it until he can 'get around to it'!
Don't let him try and do the disassembly without you being present. And one more thing..am I correct that the barrel/upper receiver assembly can slide out the rear of the lower frame..and the problem is with the locking group not being able to be pulled away from the upper receiver assembly once slid out of the lower frame? Am I correct? Confused a little here, as Mausers don't have a slide. Did you mean bolt? Thanks, Joe0 -
Thanks for the help! I said slide, I meant bolt! The bolt will come out of the barrel extension that all disassembles fine. But the top half of the gun (barrel extension) will not seperate from the bottom half (frame) of the gun. The take down latch operates smoothly but the 2 pieces will not budge, they normally just about fall apart, no pressure necessary. Odd thing is, the whole gun operates smoothly and as normal, hard to believe that can happen with the rocker in backwards? 0 -
I took it back to the dealer and got a refund. What a shame! I really liked this gun, but its a pig in a poke if it won't come apart...... 0 -
Update: The dealer did get the gun apart. The safety was bent some such that it was hang up on the frame. Good ending. 0
