I had a similar issue with a browning o/u, it is possibly dried lube inside. Get some aerosol gun degreaser and squirt it inside from the bottom kind of where the latch is. I did it twice to mine and it never fails. Hope you are so fortunate

The system has an "inertia block" that sets the sear to the second hammer. If it is not working.. 1, it is without any lubrication. 2, it is gooped up with crud. 3, the gun is not suported by your shoulder when firing the first Bbl. 4, shells produce inseficient recoil to operate the system.
From your discription of events, I'd guess the thing is just crudded up. Clean and oil !

If you can bump the butt on the floor and the trigger reset to the other barrel, but recoil from a shot doesn't do it, something is wrong. Not bad wrong if it will shift at all, but it needs attention. Flipping the safety on and off is only to try to make up for a misfire in the first barrel or some such.

There are TWO completely different systems to let the second barrel become active after the first shot from a shotgun with two barrels . one uses the recoil to activate the sear/hammer of the second barrel and others it is purely mechanical. I suspect someone used WD 40 on your shotgun in the past and this has combined with some other oil to form Glue. Please don't just try to drown it in more oil. Most oils will soften wood and lead to a cracked butt-stock. If you don't feel comfortable in removing butt-stock get gun to a gunsmith to do it. Clean it and I suggest Balistol this oil will NOT harm wood.

JUST TO CLARIFY, THE RECOIL FROM THE 1ST SHOT BLOCKS THE 2ND SEAR, THE COUNTER RECOIL FROM THE 1ST SHOT SETS THE 2ND SEAR. IF THE GUN DOESN'T MOVE FORWARD AFTER THE 1ST SHOT THE 2ND SEAR WILL NOT RESET. YOUR SHOULDER PROVIDES THIS FORWARD MOVEMENT.

Here is the spring I chose. I have not fired it yet but I feel that the tension is right. It stays forward but is very soft. IMO the spring that the gun came with was not original. It would not budge even with game loads.

My fix worked. I shot 6 rounds and the second barrel fired every time.
