More Choke Tube Questions

1. When you have fixed chokes converted to screw-in chokes what "threading" brand gets used? Invector, Winchoke, Remchoke, etc.? Seems like there are a lot of choices. Which is best and why?


2. I have noted on some websites where they show a pattern from a factory fixed choke and then a much improved pattern from the newly added screw-in choke. How/why does adding a choke tube improve patterns?

  Well the answer to your last question is that the result is largely dependent on the quality of the work being done. Adding a choke tube is no guarantee at all that the end result will be better than what you had to begin with. Stick with someone that has a stellar reputation in the field and a "history" of installations. Someone that knows where the pitfalls lie.

  You can pick, in most cases, which type of threading you want. I'd suggest choosing one of the most common: Accu-Choke which will fit Mossberg pumps, H&R, Browning Invector and Winchoke threading.
  I would suggest not having a "proprietary" threading installed as this will cause you to buy nothing but the "proprietary" tubes, usually at higher prices.
  
  Patterns depend upon choke constriction, length of constriction and how the shot is introduced into the choke area. Interchangeable choke tubes do not necessarily provide a better "pattern" than a fixed choke when compared with both having the same constriction. Interchangable choke tubes give your shotgun quite a bit more utility.

  To answer your first question. It depends on the OD of the barrel and barrel wall thickness. If you can, go with the browning/winchester style thread.

  If you want the best job done, with the best selection of choke tubes, then send your shotgun to Briley to do the work, and install their own chokes. They have designs for both the thicker, and thinner wall thickness barrels. They are truly professional grade.
