newb needs help
my dad bought me a gun from a friend not knowing any info about it and its a savage model 110 .270 and i got some bullets for it and went to shoot it and all it did was click.... could someone please tell me whats wrong with it.... thanks guys

Did the firing pin put an indentation is the primer?0 -
Lots of possibilities.
Really need more info.
Excellent rifle and caliber.
Some things to check.
1. Positive match ammo to rifle; i.e. .270 Winch. ammo and .270 W. stamp on barrel.
2. Unlikely, but could be faulty ammo; especially if very old and stored in poor conditions.
3. Check primers. Do they appear to have been strongly hit, or only lightly or not at all?
4. Could be something broken, or could just need a good cleaning, i.e. congealed gunk in bolt, etc.
Tell us more.

Guess it's time for a question that often times comes before all others. Can you send us some good pictures. I'm especially interested in the primer strike. If "strong", then, yes, most likely not the rifle, but the ammo. If light or weak, then just the opposite.0 -

Well, with a good primer strike, you've effectively taken the rifle out of the equation.
What time is it? It's new ammo time!
(And, after a while, maybe starting to handload?) It's an excellent hobby to develop!!)

Is it a deep and distinct indentation? That's key here.
It is possible to get a firing pin hit strong enough to mark a primer, but yet not strong enough to actually set off the primer and round.
Also, what kind of ammo is it? How many rounds did you try?
While an occasional dud is always possible, any commercial load that you bought recently ought to function fine (ie the number of "duds" should average FAR less than one per box!). In fact, I'd go so far as to say that unless the ammo you tried is fifty-gazillion years old and was stored in a place with wide temperature swings, it should still probably function OK.
Before buying new ammo, I'd at least take down the gun and clean it out thoroughly, especially the bolt. Any dirt in the firing pin channel can slow down the firing pin and cause misfires.
A "quick and dirty" way to clean out a gun is with a spray can of "gun-scrubber", which is basically the same stuff as brake-cleaner.0
