Smith made a few variations of the 686 with unfluted cylinders. There were 5000 called the Classic Hunter made this way.

Might have been a Lew Horton exclusive. Was the box with it?

This is a pretty fair article on the variations:

    Best.

No Non - thanks for the link! This got me thinking so I called the owner (friend of mine) this morning and got lots of other info as he has the box.

    Model 686-3
    6" bbl.
stock - says TS but has finger groove rubber grips
    Square butt
    product code-104249
    spec order-9097
the serial # starts with BDR
white outline rear sight- plain black front ramp

I am trying to convince him that this gun needs a new home. He is talking $600.00. Appears to have been shot very little. He bought it used and has only fired one box of 38 spec.
Thanks again to all that replied.

According to SCSW, that model was made in 1988, with Hogue rubber grips. Appears to be a standard catalog item.

    Still, a nice gun.

A recent ad in one of the gun mags had a distributor selling 7-shot 3" 5" and 7" .357 mags with unfluted cylinders.. along with other regular fluted ones in standard barrel lengths. They also had a few others like a 3" .44 629 etc...Can't remember which magazine had the ad, I must be gettin' old..
