38 S&W 4th Model top break revolver
Can anyone tell me how to get a mfg date on a S&W top break revolver. I've nailed down the model number based on the pinned front site. I know that the 38 S&W models were made from the late 1800's right up until 1940. Just cannot tell when this one was made.

Much more info. would be required from you for us to properly identify the gun of which you speak. Your post only gives the caliber (38 S&W), top break frame design, & pinned front sight.
Smith & Wesson made several 'top break' models. Single action, double action, & safety hammerless as well as the 'perfected' & a seldom seen single shot target model. Add to this list the numerous copies, both foreign & domestic, that were produced to sell to those thinking they were getting the real thing (often referred to as a Smyth & Western).
The pinned front sight is hardly an identifying feature as most front sights were installed that way.
To find a mfg. date:
1) post more complete info. with pictures & there are several here who can supply the info. you seek, or
2) buy a copy of the book "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edition", then read it because the info. is in there somewhere, or
3) call Smith & Wesson. If it is a genuine S&W, from the serial No. off the bottom of the butt, they will give you the mfg. date., or
4) send $50 to S&W along with a request for a factory letter. They will search their records & supply info. such as date shipped & to whom, original finish, barrel length, & a brief history of the model.

Short of that, I'll take your advice and come up with a copy of the S&W guide and go from there.0
