1919 a4 build??
there's a lot of 1919 "parts kits" on GB and other sites, all seem to be from SARCO:

the kits from private sellers run the gamut from, "still in box" to fully assembled "dummy gun"
my question:
besides the side plate, tripod and the back double grip, what else do these kits need to make a functional semi?

Parts Kits don't mean diddly, unless you have a newly manufactured semi-auto only receiver that has been approved by the feds. This is if you want to make a functioning 1919 Browning. 0 -
To build up a live gun you'll need a right side plate because this is the component part that the BATFE considers to be the actual receiver of the gun and it will have teh serial number. You will also need to go out and buy a semi auto trigger mechanism and a set of rivets to put the thing together. Once you ahve the side plate and the semi trigger assembly you need to modify the internal parts from the kit so that they will fit the new plate and work with the new trigger assembly. If you lack the machine shop skills to do this (or have no clue what to cut and grind) you can either have a pro do the work our go out and buy a full set of dedicated semi auto parts...Which sort of negates the purchase of a complete kit, but that is another story. Once you get everything together you'll need to do some drilling and then start riveting the whole thing together. Remember, we are not talking about pop-rivets are, these are the big boys and you'll need a bucking bar and a air drive riveter to do the job finished in a timely manner. Figure on parkerizing everything and then start installing the internal parts and if everything fits properly take her out and run a few belts through it for me!
This is a VERY brief overview of a complex assembly process...We are not talking about building up an AR-15, and is way beyond my abilities. If I recall correctly you are an engineer or an industrial designer or some other kind of really sharp fellow so you can probably get it done while guys like me just sit back and admire your work.0 -

i was a structural engineer before the current career, but that won't help me much on this build!
i have a source for an 80% rt side plate and blueprints that a local machine shop says they can
fabricate a final receiver assembly from.
the receiver rivets are available as a set for about $35. i figured i'd buy 2 sets, just in case[;)]
my understanding is the internals can be modified (machine shop again) for semi, but i could be wrong.
i'm hoping to have a functional gun, minus the tripod and a few accessories, for $1500.
think it's possible?

You used to be able to buy a complete one for a couple hundred more than the kit and parts.
Not sure if that is still true.
Edit: The gunsmith that writes for Shotgun News built a 1919 and documented the build in SGN a few years ago. It didn't look like that difficult of a build. Still the price of the kit and side plate before the work is done is just as much as buying one built.
If you get one, I believe there are conversion kits to shoot 8mm mauser. 8mm is still cheaper than 7.62. You might want to research that.
Also research if these can fire steel cased rusky 7.62 ammo. I just cant see wasting good surplus brass cased 7.62x51 in a 1919.0 -
I have two 1919a4's, one in 30-06 and one in 7.62. Bought them both already assembled and ready to shoot. I payed $1200 for the 7.62 at an auction. I would suggest looking around for an already assembled gun unless you like the challenge of doing the work yourself. Mark just touched on the basics of building one of these. Its a lot of work with specialized tools and know how needed. 0 -

Tom.... Just in case you might be inclined to buy an assembled gun, this one is going up for auction on 5-21 at <Elsewhere>. This is where I bought my 7.62 1919 a few years ago. This one is in the 1919a6 configuration. Bidding is at $55.00 right now. Its listed as "looks to be unfired"

Tom...... I see that you bid on it, good luck with it. As I mentioned I payed $1200 for the 7.62 1919 I got from them. Mine was about unfired, but I have since put a few hundred rounds thru it.Not sure how high your willing to go, but you may be able to get that one for less than a grand. That auction is near me so I go there and bid in person when they have guns Iam interested in.0
