A lot of European scopes have 26.5mm tube diameter which is approximately .060 larger the the standard 1.00 inch size of U.S. scopes. Either go to Brownells web site or call up their customer service folks and order 26.5mm rings for a European scope.

EDIT #1, It's possible that the tube diameter is even larger then 26.5mm, use a dial caliper to check the diameter. 26.5mm would be 1.060", and 30mm would be 1.200" approximately.

Calipers would be a good way to measure, if you were so inclined.

Personally, I'd just figure out what brand and model scope I had, then look up the specs from the manufacturer to see what diameter rings the scope was designed for.

Unless the scope was really obscure and/or long discontinued it probably wouldn't be too hard to get this information.

If you have not already drilled and mounted bases there is the option of going scout scope without altering your 98.
