Universal M1?

A local guy has a Universal M1 carbine for sale for $400. It is "like new" with scope. Is this a decent deal? I've heard the Universal has a spotty record for quality.

Any info on the Universal much appreciated.

  It may be "like new" for a reason- later carbines do not have the same parts as the GI carbine, no replacement parts available. Article tells you how to spot which is which. Me, I think I'd pass.

  Thanks for posting the article 11b6r. Doc, for what it's worth I have one of the older Universal carbines with the GI receiver. It has seen moderate use and has held up with no problems. I picked it up sevral years ago for about $100 less than the one you are looking at.
