need a under $200 pistol
looking for a $200 reliable pistol for home protection for a friend. this is for a woman, not experienced with firearms at all. would prefer double action so all she has to do is pull the trigger. revolver or semi is fine. what about the cz 70?

Felt recoil with an airweight is generally too much for inexperienced shooters. I learned the hard way on that one. I gave my sister a S&W model 37 and the first time she shot it her grip was too loose and the hammer bit her hand. The OP specified home defense as opposed to carry so there's no reason to choose an airweight.0 -

Before you both do anything else:
1) Send/take her to a BEGINNER'S HANDGUN SAFETY CLASS. History books are full of similar cases where a nervous newbie blows-away the roommate, spouse, friend, etc.

I like it. Won't do +P 38, but this shooter is not likely to want +P anyway.

Newbie handgun = DA REVOLVER! Unless you plan to take her shooting every weekend and will get her thoroughly proficient in the operation of an automatic, get her a good used DA .38 Special revolver. 0 -
First of all, a good security system (or even a large dog) is better than any pistol.
A pistol only works for home defense if a. you actually have physical access to it when the s hits the f and b. you know how to use it.
Is your friend willing to keep a loaded gun (or one immediately loadable) within arms reach? Is she willing to practice quite a bit to learn how to use the gun properly? If the answer to these things is "no", then she doesn't need a gun.

Answer is Smith and Wesson model 10 revolver in .38 special (period).
Since these guns have been so popular for years as police and security guns, and have literally been manufactured by the millions, there are still tons of cheap surplus ones on the market, including ones in the $200 price range.
Revolver is more reliable than any auto. Its has only three controls: Hammer, cylinder release, and trigger, and you probably don't even need to use one of them (hammer).
Unlike an auto, a revolver has no stiff slide to cause individuals with low upper body strength problems in retracting. Unlike autos, revolvers also won't jam if you don't hold them tightly enough when firing. If the gun doesn't go off, you just pull the trigger again. No need to try and clear a "jam" under stress.
Auto is easier to clean and maintain, and generally does not require disassembly to do so.
On EAA windicator, the actions on those guns aren't as good as the Smith and Wessons, you're more likely to find a "lemon", and they lose more value on resale. I think for what amounts to the same price, the Smith is a better bet.0 -
Smith 36, 10, 442, 642 (these Airweights can be had for $400 NEW),,,whichever can be had used for the price range mentioned (most likely a 10 as mentioned). Robust, simple to operate and dogedly reliable...best possible combination of attributes in a defensive sidearm for a less than proficient shooter. Many good points brought up regarding other areas on concern too. Best question? Is she really willing to shoot and KILL an intruder/assailant? Lots of poeple wrongly assume a junkie looking for a fix will be intimidated by a firearm weilded by a homeowner...not always going to work so you better be ready to stop them in a permanent fashion, or your "protection" is liable to be taken from and used against you. Don't mean to discourage her from doing this...just want to relate some salient situational points that can have the gravest bearing on surviving such a scenario. Just picked up a used police trade in a S&W pre model 10 that is in great mechanical condition for $ 200.00 out the door at a gunshow. 0
