38 A.M.U.
I've got a box of Remington ammo from the Bridegport timeframe. reads for use in accurized pistols. What does AMU stand for?? Even the headstamps read 38 AMU. For 38 Auto?? This is a white box and perfect shape and obviusly old as Remington hasn't made ammo in bridgeport for probably more than 50 years. Value??

The 38 A.M.U. (Army Marksmanship Unit ) was introduced for the 1964 Army National Match. The 38 AMU was used in special 1911 pistols made by Colt with Drake Slides and were only used for the 1964 National Match.

I probably should not take up one of the 10 posts as I am not an expert on cartridges but do recall when the .38 AMU was in use. As I recall it is a rimless version of the .38 S & W Special cartridge. As you said it was developed by the AMU. They had, and probably still have, expert gunsmiths in the AMU and were capable of altering pistols to the extent necessary to fire this cartridge which was loaded with the bullets flush with the front of the case, as are .38 Special Wadcutter rounds. 0 -
Back in the 1950's people were trying to get a semi auto to shoot in the CENTERFIRE stage of N.R.A. 2700 Bulls-Eye matches these matches had a 22RIMFIRE stage a Centerfire stage "any centerfire 32 CALIBER and larger and a 45ACP stage. many people shot revolvers the K 38 and Colt officers model match. The 38 super did not shoot very good groups so some of the master pistol smith started converting 38 super Colts to 38 Special. However getting a RIMMED case to feed out of the available 1911 type magazines were problematic. So Colt started producing the 38 AMU most of these were Parts shipped to the military marksmanship units to be built into match pistols . about the same time S&W started building their Great model 52 that did feed the flush wadcutter 38 special Colt later came out with the MID-RANGE 38 Gold CUP but these did not make the accuracy grade. Colt also produced KIT guns these were a box of parts with slides marked 38 KIT and 45 KIT they were to be have all parts fitted by the gunsmith. I have 3 of the 45 KIT guns "pictures on request. " the 38 AMU lost favor as the ammo makers as far as I know only made ONE short run of ammo >I had a 5 gallon bucket of brass I sold a few years ago. loaded factory ammo would have collector value. Now most people looking for less recoil then the 45ACP in the centerfire stage of a 2700 match shoot 32S&W long wadcutter. I like the 45ACP because it gives one good practice to get ready for the CMP matches "PRAISE THE HARD-BALL GUN" 0
