Can a private party ship a C&R revolver to a 01 FFL without special DOJ paperwork?

Yes. A private party can ship any firearm, not just a Curio and Relic, to a CA dealer without the DOJ shipping number because that regulation only applies to shipments between dealers. Keep in mind that you must be sure that the dealer will accept a firearm shipped form an unlicensed person. There are many FFLs around the country who insist on dealer to dealer shipping.

One more question. Is a C&R handgun still a C&R if it has been engraved? What constitutes altering it from its original configuration? 0 -
Engraving won't make any differnce so far as it's classification as a Curio and Relic. It will save considerable time if you simply tell us what pistol it is that you are talking about and then we can give opinions based on what we know rather then guessing. Unlike general Discussion, you only get ten posts per thread in this forum so we like to get down to business. 0 -

Engraving won't matter nor will changing items like the stocks, sights or even replacing the barrel, so long as you stay with a length and caliber (I think that there were about a dozen) that was OEM. Turn the old Colt (for example) into a silhouette pistol in .44 Magnum and with a 10 inch barrel and you are no longer C&R. 0 -
I'm going to pirate LL's photo to use an an example: Let's say that the pistol is over fifty years old and as such would be a Curio and Relic by definition. Modified to this degree it could not longer be classified as a C&R handgun.
