38-55 load question 1893 Marlin
Hello,
I have a few questions regarding pressure and powder charge.
1.) My Lyman reloading book says 31 grains of IMR 3031 will produce 17,00 CUP for a 38-55 with a 249 gr. bullet. OK the next page says 26.8 grains of 3031 will produce 35,000 CUP with a 255 grain bullet in a .375 Win. I KNOW THEY DON'T INTERCHANGE, I just don't get the pressure difference.
2.) Does anyone know what kinda pressure the 1893 Marlin can handle? Mine is smokeless steel version.
3.) Does anyone have load data for 38-55 and 3031 powder? Safe for 1893 Marlins. The starting load in my book is 31 grains over 249 grain bullet.(cast) I actually have 245 gr. cast lubed bullets on hand .379 dia.

Does your 93 say "Smoke;ess Powder Steel" on the barrel?
Mine had a 26" barrel, I loaded H4895 behind an Oregon Trail cast bullet. It's late and I'm not going to dig my old load book out tonight, so I can't give you details. The first thing I would do is slug the barrel, they varyy from .375 to .380 on those old rifles.
If your barrel doesn't say smokeless on it, you had better stick with light Trail Boss loads, or black powder.

While the external dimensions of the two cases mentioned are almost identical, the internal dimensions are not. Kinda like the 223 Remington case versus the 5.56 NATO.
While I am not sure what you are looking at, I would think with those kind of pressures, that the 375 data would be using a jacketed bullet. Copper jackets are not as forgiving as lead, or lead alloys.
On a last note, you might want to think about switching powders. I have been using TRAIL BOSS, and love the results. It was designed for use with lead.

the other posters are certaily correct. the m-93 is a strong action and will handle any published load for the .38/55. the differences you note (for the .375 win.)are probably because of smaller case capacity and a jacketed bullet. my m-93 .38/55 likes 12.8 gns of trail boss with the 250 gn bullets (cast bullets only come close to published weights as alloys vary). starline has thinner walled cases for the larger dia. bullets if you have trouble chambering loaded rounds with the .379" dia bullets. 0 -
I like 21gr. of H-4198 248 gr. cast in my Win.1894 (1901)
