Rossi S201220BS register it as a pistol???

Can I purchase a Rossi S201220BS register it as a pistol remove the butt and turn the barrels down to less than 16" and be legal.
Basically make a T/C Contender without spending $1k
And yes I do realize the quality between the two?_?

    If a firearm is originally manufactured and sold as a long gun, i.e. rifle/shotgun. It can't be legally converted into a handgun as far as the feds are concerned. It has to have been originally made as a handgun. If you can get Rossi to go into production and get it approved by the cali DOJ who have to approve all handguns sold in cali, your good to go.

    I read somewhere that you can convert a rifle to a pistol but have to do some paper work with ATF and pay some tax?

    What you may have read is that a rifle can be converted to a SBR (short barrelled rifle) by filling out some paperwork & paying a fee.

    Also you need to do that BEFORE you convert it. If I remember right fill paperwork out and $200 fee, once you are approved you should be good to go.

    AS stated below, the receiver is what counts as the weapon. You can add whatever short length barrels you want to but you MUST have the reciever properly registered first.

    If all you are wanting is a 22LR for hiking, why not just buy a Ruger Mk2 or Mk3 You are going to be out the same money in the end anyway and if you ever sold the Rossi you are probably not going to recoup your money. You will with the Ruger.

    But SBR only allows am minimum length of 27" ?

    A Short Barreled Rifle has an overall length of less than 26 inches, or a barrel length less than 16 inches. A Short Barreled Shotgun is less than 26" overall, or barrels less than 18". In removing the shoulder stock, and shortening barrel to less than the magic number, by the National Firearms Act you are MANUFACTURING an SBR. You apply to the BATFE, pay the $200 fee, and THEN you can make one (as far as the Feds are concerned- check your State laws). By the time you do that, wait 6 months for the ATF, a T-C looks pretty good.

    Simply removing a shoulder stock does not make a firearm a SBR- sorry if I gave that impression. However, if the overall length in firing condition drops below 26 inches, OR if the barrel is less than 16 inches, THAT is an SBR. If you add a shoulder stock TO a pistol, which has barrels less than 16 inches, THAT becomes an SBR. Add shoulder stock AND a 16 inch bbl, you have made a rifle. But you cannot UNMAKE a rifle- or it becomes "firearm made FROM a rifle". Please do not ask why the rules make no sense- they were drafted by the Feds.

    If "IF" Wikipedia is correct your statement of removing the shoulder stock "butt" making it a SBR is incorrect, it must have a butt to be a SBR, adding a butt to a pistol makes it a SBR. Not arguing just stating what I read.

    After reading on the subject regarding the reason I wanted this info was for hiking (bear/ lion and food) food I only need a 22LR. I've found the bear spray is a better option than anything other than a .375 h&h.
    So I'll go with a 22LR single shot pistol with a 12" carbon or aluminum barrel, probably something I'll have to turn myself.

    If you use your barrel on the Rossi action, it would still be classified as an NFA weapon. You would have to make the receiver, too. Then, you could cut the Rossi bbl. down and use it on your "pistol" receiver.

    Notice the part of the stock that 'widens'?? You don't need to have it. You can legally cut the stock (and bevel it or round it off like a broomhandle it to make it look nice) right at the end of the upper and lower tang...if you wish. Neat, huh?
