Mosin Nagant refinish

Just bought a mosin nagant 91/30 yesterday. Everything is in great condition except for the stock varnish. I have already planned putting a matte black duracoat, but am now considering revarnishing. Any thoughts?

  If it's the usual MN shellac, solvent alcohol and fine steel wool will even things out nicely. Most of the Mosin Nagants that I've seen have a heavy enough coat that moving some around didn't hurt.
