According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica & Nahas, the M10-7 was made only in 1977. They also say that the 3" barrel was available on special order until the 1980's when that barrel length was cataloged. They indicate that there was a special run of the M10-7 with 3" barrel made for Australian police, so I would guess that yours could be from the overrun.

If it were my gun, I'd keep it in the safe. It's a gem that you are unlikely to ever see again.

Hey Neal, thank you very much for the info. Actually, 1977 fits perfectly.

My dad semi retired in 1977. To fight off boredom and make a little mad money, he intended to work part time for a friend of his that had started a security company. Soon after, he was upset that they wouldn't let him carry a gun on the job. I just took for granted that he was planning to carry his 45. Evidently he had ordered this smith, and when he found he couldn't carry it, just wrapped it up and put it away. We didn't even know he had it until after he passed away.

So here it sits. A pristine unfired 10-7 with a 3" barrel. Don't worry, Neal. It will only come out of the safe for periodic inspections and fresh oil.
