Remington 7400

has anyone heard of gas block cracking on 7400? what could cause and can gun be fixed. gun is 30-06 delux

    i just picked one of these up in a GB auction and upon closer inspection noticed it had no sling posts. well i found the front adapter, but would like to know if you have to drill the holes for the rear posts. it is the synthetic model, 270 caliber. i haven't gotten the gun yet, just saw it in the pictures.

    When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

    Must not be anyone who knows.

    I sent an e-mail to Remington earlier tonight. I have even found the part number on their web-site.

    I should have a reply in a day or so.

    I have a Model 700 that I put an XCR stock on and love it. The Model 750 stock looks like similar construction.

    Why would you want to try a 750 stock, when there are plenty or 7400 synthetic stocks out there? Seems kinda counter productive to me. Actually, if it were me, I would dump both the 7400 and it stock, and get a Browning BAR, or Winchester SXR...something I know will go bang when I need it to.

    Go to MidwayUSA and enter a search for 7400 furniture or stock sets...Ram-Line among others make decent replacement stocks for the Remington autoloaders. Don't want to come off as "prickly" or snobbish, but I would agree with Tim on this one...I have seen serious issues with 740's and 7400's over the years and feel the BAR would be a great choice. Some of the 740's run for years sans any user repair, some never run well or are outright scary. Cleaning seems to be the major issue as if they are not well maintained, they tend to wear in bad spots. Anyway, take it for what its worth...just an opinion; your gun...your butt!

    I know for sure the Buttstocks are different and not interchangable , not sure about the forend !

    Hey Guys,

    Could be that there were issues with these. We will see about this one when I get it to the range. I know it cycles well manually, and I broke it completely down the day I picked it up. The truth is, I am a little crazy about maintaining my guns.

    If it functions well, I will continue my fun with it. As far as the stock, I don't really like the look of the 7400 factory stocks. If the 750 stock will not fit, then I will pick up a 7400 synthetic. I simply could not find the information I was looking for and thought I might "ask the experts." I didn't expect to be told the 740 - 7400 were junk and get a BAR. Wouldn't mind having one of those as well. Maybe I will. I have noticed that the BAR and Winchester Autoloader can be found in Magnum Calibers. Could be fun after I get done with this one.

    Thank for at least being respectful! I thought the butt stock would fit for sure, it was the fore end that concerned me. You could be right though.

    Mine has been flawless for over 300 rounds so I think you'll be just fine.[;)] Alot of haters around here.[:D]

    Not really haters. Some just chose not to sugar coat. If you sugar coat a spade, is it still a spade?...well, yes it is...so why not cut to the chase, and call a spade a spade?

    Just 300 rounds...that is not even an hour of range time[:D].

    If it makes it past 1000, check back in and tell us.

    Thanks for the humor. We are just trying to help you out, and yes we are sugar coating a bit, but his series of Remington rifles are basically disposable. They eat themselves from the inside out, because of the design. Search using the search engine and you will find numerous posts concerning these rifles...90% or more are bad.

    300 or 1000 rounds? I would not normally put more than 50 or so through in 1 trip to the range. Maybe that's the difference!

    Problem is the 7400 is not a enduring rifle so why bother?

    A hunting rifle is not a range rifle. It will take me years to put a 1000 rounds through it. In the mean time its a good light little shooter that gets the job done. I'm happy and it did'nt cost an arm and a leg. If I paid over $600 for a rifle I would expect a lot more. Mine only cost me $300. P.S. my hunting partner has a 740 that he's had for a long time (at least 20 years) and it is beat up and still works like new.

    Many of folks have rifles they have used to hunt with, that they have put 1000's of rounds thru on the range. That is including myself, and yes, I have killed deer with an AR-15, with a Wylde chamber for the 223. No, it don't take a magazine full either...one shot where it is supposed to go.
