Can't help with the grip question but you're on the right track thinking about how to deal with the big bruins, "should the need arise."
An old family friend in Southeast made a living studying the browns. In hundreds of documented and well chronicled close encounters he never felt the need to fire on a bear, though on one occasion he would have if the bear had come any closer. It didn't, and neither did he.
Hunting is another question and .338 and .375's were the caliber of choice. For defense the 12 guage pump had many adherents. This was back in the '60's, but I suspect the dynamics are still the same.

If you can't find any grips, just wrap tape around to custome fit your hands. It won't be very pretty but atleast the grips will be protected and who's gonna laugh anyway.

    Google "Tombstone Grips".
