M1 CARBINE SCOPE MOUNT QUESTION

I picked up a Inland Carbine-- Hi wood stock -- Ser.# 312415 inland barrel dated 5-43 When i got the carbine it did not have a rear sight and the family said it belong to GrandPa and it never had a sight ( I put a sight on the gun ) I could see that at one time there was a SCOPE MOUNT on the gun -- There is only one threaded screw hole at the breach and think the rear mount went into the rear sight dove tail also the wood on the stock has been milled away 1/8 '' deep 5 1/8 '' long for a bar to fit along the breech front to rear.-- Can someone tell me what type of one screw scope mount would fit this carbine -- I can send a photo to you if you need it -- Thank you -- Rickm1-1.jpg

    The military never issued the M1 carbine with a conventional scope. However, the T3 carbine was fitted with a modified Redfield-type scope mount & issued with an infrared scope. Original T3 carbines are valuable, rewelded ones not so much. This may or may not be what you have.

    There have been commercial scope mounts made for the carbine, so it's also possible that Grandpa just altered a standard M1 carbine.

    Hopefully you didn't mutilate the gun when you installed the rear sight.

    There is no current manufacturer of this type mount. If you check the GB auctions, a used one might show up some day.

    EDIT: Sorry, but it looks like a standard M1 carbine that was mutilated by Grandpa to mount a commercial scope. Too bad he didn't use a "no drill" mount. As I said, watch the auctions & you may be able to find one that fits.

    There were three types of infrared Snooperscope mounts for the U.S. Carbine.
    None utilized a hole in the receiver.
    Only one of them was converted from a standard M-1 Carbine.
    That one used a long strap with a male dovetail that engaged the rear sight dovetail. The front extended to halfway along the handguard.
    The arrangement included a 2 pc barrel clamp with a stud extending through a hole in the handguard and through the strap.
    A wingnut secured the the strap to the stud.
    The scope mount layout was identical to the Redfield Junior mount with the exception of the windage adjustment screws which had a smaller thread diameter. I believe 8-32 Vs 10-32.

    Years ago, Numrich sold a mount with one screw hole and a dovetail that fit into the rear sight slot. I have one that's in pretty rough shape. I can email you pics if interested.

    Numrich also lists one, with one screw mounting in the dovetail, on their website, but it's "sold out"; part # 811600.
