Well the FAL is fairly versitile, and well proven.

I'd go with a DSA FAL. I haveny shot an RRA .308, but I have shot quite a few FALS, and they are accurate and reliable enough.

In terms of ersatility the RRA AR platform will always be more versatile and have a far broader range of options than the FAL. I like DSA, they make some really neat stuff. I live about 10 miles from their shop and have seen and shot a lot of their guns and have been universally impressed. The option of changing out uppers ( a huge variety of options here) on an AR makes it a much more versatile weapons system than the FAL. I would also state that in my opinion the RRA's are much more than a "decent" AR type; they are near the top of the heap in terms of build and qulity control, and again, I have shot quite a number of their guns and NEVER been less than impressed. My vote is for the AR, RRA...I can all but assure you you will be happy, and you will have myriad options in terms of accessories and caliber choices.

At the gun show this weekend, I was talking to a local company that makes custom rifles. I was discussing them putting together a custom AR-10 for me. They discussed this and then said "or you could just purchase a RRA LAR-8".

I have a couple of RRA rifles in 5.56 and love them. I think I will purchase the LAR-8.

If I didn't have so much money invested in the Armalite platform the RRA guns would be my next choice.

The RRA rifles are fine rifles, and I have several AR-15's of theirs, and I also like DPMS. You can't go wrong either way, but if I were going with a common mfg in an AR-10, it would be the DPMS, as they use the STONER type magazines, which I believe are more reliable in the AR platform.
