No offense, if you have a undrilled or a factory d & t'ed pre64 Model 70? I wouldn't be drilling and tapping any new holes in the receiver if it's factory original and in Very Good condition. Pretty much kills it's future collectors value.

I would agree with you 100% on the model 70 but this does not have the original stock which would seem to drop its value as well.

you will not have to D&T you model 70 win. for the unertl bases if it,s factory tapped. rear base will fit on the front reciever ring,s two holes and the front unertl base will fit in the rear sight dove tail(front base has a dove tail for mounting). 03A3 will need tapped. eastbank.

The M1903A3 didn't use Unertl bases (if you are considering an authentic re-make). The US gov't sniper '03A3's used a Lyman Alaskan (M82) scope, or the Weaver scope. Both 2.5 power post reticles. Now, if you insist on going the Unertl route, and wish to maintain authenticity..

..The USMC used Unertl's on the top of the M1903's (NOT '03A3's). They even kept the barrel-mounted ladder sight attached to the rifle (It was beneath the scope).

The only '03A3's with scopes were Remington and/or Smith-Corona.
The only M1903's with scopes were Springfield, or sometimes, Rock Island rifles.

This is just so you know. Close scrutiny will reveal that the rifle is non-authentic, but I certainly wouldnt want it to be spotted as bogus from across the room! Anyways, hope I helped a little. Joe

    EDIT
Sorry about not answering your question directly. Others in the area you mentioned will chime in with their gunsmith recommendations. Best again, Joe

Ummmm, Unertl scopes were only installed on SA 1903-A1 rifles, as well as the Win M70's. Not a lot of demand for that type installation any more, so you may have to call around to find the 1 or 2 folks left with the skill. I assume that you have the Unertl mounts & the special handguard for the 1903-A1.

    I'd try:

    Roland Beaver (AR) - 501-724-6388

    Dean's Gun Restorations - www.dgrguns.com - (TN)

    Richard Hudnut (CA) - 408-727-2876

    Neal DePiano (AL) - 205-428-8962

No scope was ever authorized for use on the 1903A3. They were used on the Remington 1903A4, however.

in the cmp sniper matches only the 03A1 i think can have the unertl scope. but it will clean up at the matches,as it has the best repeatable adjustments and hight power. eastbank.
