8X60 ammunition

Does anybody know of a source of 8X60 ammunition, the 0.323" variety? At one time RWS made it.

    Unless you can find a custom loader, which would likely be quite spendy=$$$. You are stuck with reloading them yourself. If it's a .323 not going to be super tough, as long as it's a standard SAMMI dimensioned chamber, except for length.

    Do a proper chamber cast using bismuth alloy. As long the shoulder to base dimension is in the same ballpark as the 8MM Mauser brass, fireform the 8 X 57 brass to the 8 X 60 chamber. Although the neck would be shorter, use a Lee 8 X 57 factory crimp die to make sure your bullets are held securely in the case neck for firing.

    The original poster never mentioned it, but the usual 8 X 60 is a rimless cartridge. It was originated and used by German gunmakers in the early 1920's to get around the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty limited the amount of 8mm Mauser/8 X 57 rifles, that the Germans could possess and make. So they went to the 8 X 60 which is virtually the same cartridge.

    Right you are. I just got in the habit of calling his round the 8x60S, because of me owning some of the rifles that use the rimmed version of that oldie.

    RWS is still making this cartridge but it may be a little difficult to find in the U.S. This blurb is from their website:

    "The 8x60S is based on the 8x57IS. This development was forced by the restrictions on military weapons and their ammunition as a consequence of the First World War. The 8x60S is loaded with the heavier 8 mm bullets with a diameter of 323" (8.20 mm). It is a balanced standard cartridge for short to medium distances. It is definitely a good woods cartridge and usable on all Central European hoofed game. When used on roe deer, it does not cause any significant damage to the venison. And it is also satisfactory for red deer and wild boar. This is a cartridge that can be used well in the large game hunting grounds of Central Europe."

    There are several suppliers of RWS ammunition here in the U.S. but I haven't seen any listings for the 8x60(S).

    The cartridge is simple to load for as the brass is available from Buffalo Arms. It's also easy to make the brass cases from '06 brass as well.

    You can contact one of the suppliers carrying RWS ammunition to see if they can get you some but be prepared for sticker shock.
