Smith & Wesson Model # ?

Hi Guys,

I need to tap your knowledge. I have a Smith and Wesson .357 MAG. SN 74K20XX [believe 1980 production]. The other number stamped in the drop out arm of the cylinder is 77688. Can someone please tell me what model number this is, and how do I know if it is Stainless or nickel finish. I thank you in advance for your support in helping me.

    Being it's not marked, we need quality photos. It could be a plated 19 or one of the 60's series SS guns?

    My 1977 M-66 has a 9K98XXX serial number, so I would expect this "K" frame to be later than that. It could be a M-13 or the SS version of the M-13 as well.

    Thanks, I just called S&W. No luck there, they say when this gun was produced they had no computer system ??? They say that the 77688 number is NOT the model #. They say the model number is stamped directly below the SN. When I look here I can see where it scratched or worn out. I just got the gun back from the police. It was stolen three years ago and was my fathers department carry model. It is either stainless or nickel ? My best guess maybe MOD 461 or 661 under the scratching ???? would there be another stamping under the grips ? I will have to post a picture as soon as I can borrow a camera. Anyones insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

    smith says 1980 production ???? then again, they did not have a computer system so I am uncertain.

    The model number is stamped on the frame, not the crane (which you call the drop out arm).

    The serial number should be stamped on the bottom of the grip frame, which may require removal of the "stocks". But, if you didn't look there, how do you know it's SN is 74K20XX?

    SN I have , it is in the frame near the cylinder, SN 74K2083 Model number is under it and scratched out.

    If it is a adjustable sight ex police revolver, it's most likely a stainless Model 66. Very few departments issued or allowed officers to carry nickel plated revolvers. 66-1 would denote the first engineering change after the Model 66 was introduced.

    Got the skinny on my firearm. I spoke with a historian at Colt. Model 66, manufactured June 1981. Stainless.
