.308 Platform AR
I am in the market for a "carbine" style AR in .308/7.62x51mm. I am going to use the rifle as a "brush" gun for hog/deer hunting and just for shooting. I have a very accurate .308 Remington 700 that is my long range rilfe with a tactical scope on it but it isn't the best thing for thick cover. The problem is that this will be my first AR purchase and I don't know who is making the best AR's in a .308/7.62? I have heard all the usually names like Armalite, DPMS, Rock River Arms and have heard of the expensive makers like Lewis Machine and Tool, LWRC, LaRue, and Knights Arm.(way too expensive). I don't mind paying for quality, but I am not going to spend over $2800 on the rifle by itself, besides still have scope and other accessories to buy for gun. I know Colt is coming out with a new .308 the SP901 later this year but I cannot find out anything about the gun other than whats in this sentence already. Which makers are making the best quality (accuracy, reliability, etc.)"carbine" style AR's today. By "carbine" I mean something with an 18 inch barrel or shorter that will still provide sub-MOA or at least MOA accuracy at 100 yds with the right ammo.

I know DPMS is not a top tier co but I bought a 16" chromelined tacticool carbine from a run RGuns had built.
It shoots 1" at 100 yds w Fed GM and a 3X ACOG.

Love my DPMS LR-308 Panther Sportical. 2 deer, 1 hog and 1 bobcat with it last season wearing a Bushnell Holosight. (40-110 yard shots)

It's hard to go wrong with the DPMS, or the Remington R-25. They are both the same gun, built by DPMS. They take the original STONER magazine too, which is bounds above the FAL magazine, IMHO.

This doesn't sound to promising on the DPMS rifles.

The use of handloaded ammo in ANY gun, would void the factory warranty if the factor knew about it. I have two DPMS right now, and have shot several other's. That is strictly BS, and hearsey about them not feeding any NATO spec ammo. The DPMS is one of the prized medium range sniper rifles employed in the sandbox as we speak.

As an FYI, it was a Rock River Arms FACTORY rifle that beat all the bolt action rifles at this year's Hickory Ground Hog Shoot. This included a besting of even the most highly vaunted Savage BR and F-Class factory rifles.
As to the quote used to disparage the DPMS rifles, it was obviously written by someone with an axe to grind and totally lacking in the knowledge of how an AR-type rifle works. AR rifles need a consistent ammunition manufactured to produce the same pressure all the time. This is a semi-auto gas gun after all. You can't expect to feed a good AR just any type of cheap or foreign ammunition and still expect it to perform perfectly every time. The writer obviously isn't even remotely aware of this or he wouldn't have wasted the space and electrons to put it down.
All factories make the same statement about voiding the warranty when handloads are used.

I dont' know if that statement came from the owners manual, website or where ... but I've shot 2 cases of Portugese surplus through my LR-308 with factory, original AR10 and Magpul mags with zero feeding, firing or ejecting problems.
