S&W Hand Ejector

I have a S&W Hand Ejector made in 1920 that has S/N 92462 on the butt, barrel, and cylinder, but has S/N 68966 on the hinge or crane and the frame under the rear of the barrel. Why 2 S/Ns? Thanks.

  Tomorrow I'm going to look at a 2nd model 1926 hand ejector in .44 special. Is there anything I need to look for? Is the serial number on the frame, barrel and cylinder? Should I remove the grips? If so, what would I be looking for? Seller is asking $800/trade. I could use all the words of wisdom I can get. Thanks in advance.

  S&W used an assembly number in the crane way on many revolvers. The number on the butt is the one that counts.

  The 'off' number is for in-house use to keep lots together prior to final assembly/fit. Unless writing a thesis on S&W, it makes no matter to us mere mortals.

  Thanks guys. I was hoping it would be one of those rare high dollar mistakes but it's a great gun anyway.
