I'm looking for a reliable 1911, open to cal.and make .But I won't be shooting in compition and don't want to tie up alot of dough. any suggestions? thanks Bob 0 -
1911A1- 1942- Nickel- Yes. 0 -
1942 was during the middle of World War II. Factory nickel plated .45's aren't common to begin with. Best get a factory letter to verify the one your inquiring about was nickeled by Colt. 0 -

A factory nickel plated Government Model is possible, although unlikely.
A factory nickel plated 1911A1 is not possible.

EDIT: What we have here is a failure to communicate. I have no idea of what you have. It would be best if you posted photos of your gun. Photos should be good enough that we can read all of the markings.0 -
there is a C prefix in the serial no.S&W referred to it as a commercial model.what type of grips are correct for the 1911(manufacture yr.1942) 0 -
C prefix is Civilian model not Military So Yes it is POSSIBLE however Rare. With good detailed close-up 6" or less Pictures of the slide roll marks/stampings and frame markings we may be able to tell you if we see evidence of a refinish. If it looks Factory to US then it will be worth the cost to get a factory letter. 0 -
correction:it was colt who referred to my 1911 as a commercial model not s&w as i had mistakenly posted.the colt horse logo has a small break in one of the lines which leads me to beleive the gun was not factory nickeled.i am unable to post pictures.thank you all for your replies. 0 -
which grips are correct for the colt 1911 commercial model born in 1942? 0 -
Pre war were Wood checkering with out diamonds around grip screw. There are some pistols . Post war were sort of like Military plastic with wide 1/8 inch smooth around grip screw. then came the COLT WOOD again plastic that had fake wood grain pattern 0
