7.7 Jap Loads
I have an original 7.7 jap. Just wondering if someone could look up the min/max load for a 174/175 gr sierra MKHP bullet tip with IMR3031/IMR4895 powders. I do not have a current sierra book.
If you have a pet load and wouldn't mind disclosing it that would be appreciated too! It will give me a starting point!
I know factory ammo in WWII was 175 gr bullet at 2400ish FPS. I will be trying to match that load so the sights will be accurate for at least 200 yards.
I believe that the 175 gr MKHP will have a better BC than it was in WWII so the sights might be wrong pass that. Giving it a more flatter trajectory. Wouldn't shoot a deer past 200 yards with that rifle any way!

You will need the proper bullet here: 7.7x58mm Arisaka bores run .310-.312" (175gr Sierra MKHP mikes-out @ .308").
Any bullet designed for the .303 Brit, 7.62x54R Russian, or 7.65x53 Argentine Mauser will suffice. The Rem 180gr RNSP is an old personal favorite.0 -

Well take this for what it is worth, but IMR/Hodgdon underloads for this round on their website rather severely. LIability issues of course, due to the availability of last ditch models and poorly sporterized ones.
I've had no trouble running a 180 gr round nose with 45 gr of 4895. This still is by no means a real rip snorter load, and you could use it with the 174 gr as well. In fact it is 1 grain UNDER a max load for a .308, a significantly shorter cartridge. Usual caveats apply, start at 10% under and work up.0 -
I have been using 3031 powder to reload my Jap 7.7 I will try to get you some more info when I get back from vacation next week.I love that gun. I was a gift from my dad to my son but somehow I ended up reloading for it and shooting it.[:D]Iam happy 0 -
It is a fantastic firearm. I am going to pick up some 3031 and some 4895 today as well. (for the jap and other rifles). Thanks!
