rong
I am going to trade some
very little used firearms
for an AR15.

Should I trade the 3 screw .357 ruger 6.5" brl
or the Smith and Wesson mod 19-4.?


Better yet. which might bring me more money
for a trade, because it's a toss up between the 2.

Thanks-I know I can rely on you folks
to head me in the right directions.

    If trading to a dealer, you will not get what either one is worth.
    You would be better off selling and using the cash instead of trading. Either one would go real quick on GB.

    Smith 19,,,better trade value,,if nobody traded guns there would never be any thing to look at in a Gunshop.[:)]..imo.

    As a rule of thumb a dealer will only allow you 50% of what he expects to get out of a gun, for trade purposes. Some guns like .32 revolvers and 16 gauge shotguns won't move at all, so the above only refers to guns that are commercially viable.

    As one of the previous posters noted you would be way ahead of the game by selling one or both of the guns to a private party.

    Some folks won't do this though as they always want to have a iron clad paper trail on all their firearms transactions.

    I don't know where you guys trade,,,50% ??? Depends on what it is,,the 19 in this area would get him a "good" trade on an AR....but hey who am I to argue..

    Tell us more about the 3screw Ruger.

    Bill Jordan a 3 screw Ruger is an old model manufactured before 1973 and can have a bit of value depending on age and condition. There were 3 screws holding the internal parts in place prior to 1973 rather than the 2 pins used in the current Ruger single actions.

    The 3 Screw Ruger is a similar
    design funtion wise to the old
    and new (I think) SAA.

    One can only safely insert 5 rounds
    into the chambers as the firing pin rests
    right "on" the chamber and a sharp
    "jar" or blow could cause the pistol
    to discharge if the chamber wasn't empty.

    New Rugers have a transfer bar system where
    as the trigger has to be pulled before the pin
    is allowed to strike the primer.

    If that Ruger is real old, and is a FLATTOP in good condition, it is worth more. The S&W in my opinion is about the same, but I would keep that for a shooter.

    For the best value for both, I would avoid TRADING IN. you will get 50-70% of what you would get here on the auction side.

    keep the smith it makes a fine defense gun to go along with the ar you want or if you must move it,
    sell it private or here on GB you will get at least $100 more that way

    gonna lower my sights on an Ar
    and try and keep both the 357's.
