Stock Duplication
Can I give a stock duplicator my finished stock for use in his stock duplicator machine without any damage to the factory stock and its finish?

Most stock duplicators use a dual spindle set up with one side holding the pattern while the other side holds the basic wood to be carved. Think of a pantograph. The pattern stock is usually held between two centers so the butt and forearm tip will have to be protected but still held rigidly enough to perform the task of being an accurate pattern. Basically you temporarily attach another piece of wood to both ends to accommodate the centers.
The pattern side has a stylus which contacts the pattern to translate the shape to the basic wood. Now, the stylus can be padded slightly or a stylus with a radius can be used but the pattern stock can still be marked if you're not careful. I have covered a pattern with masking tape to protect the surfaces but I had to go very carefully with every move so as not to gouge or mark the pattern.
