1946 Winchester model 70 ?
This is on a classified ad and I was wondering your thoughts on it, if it was worth the money. It is not to far from me and wish I could figure how to show this pic on here, but it looks real clean in the picture. What say you ??? It is a 30 gov.
"That's right 1946 was the year this "transitional" Winchester was manufactured. These are the highest quality collectible rifles Winchester has made. The gun is 100% original and shows adequate ware for its age. The barrel is stamped appropriately with all of the factory information. The barrel is 24 inches long and the receiver is topped with a 3 x 9 VARI X II Leupold scope (the scope alone is valued at $400) there are no extra holes drilled other than the factory ones provided for side mounted peep and for the scope mounts new for the period. The wood is 100% with no splits or cracks however, as stated above there are a few bumps and places where the finish on the wood has been worn. This is an exceptionally rare rifle beyond the standard transition model because it has the rear cloverleaf receiver but the stock reflects the tapered end for the upcoming postwar design that was yet to be produced! The rifle also sports the super grade magazine cover and has the one piece integrated front ramp site! THE GUN WILL LETTER! The serial number is 63563 placing it at 1946 the rifling is bright and shiny and the gun will put five rounds through the same hole on a bench, no exaggeration! The original owner gifted it to me before his death as a reward for saving his life from his house fire. I will take bids until April 15th, 2011 and if they are not adequate the gun has to be to ROCK ISLAND AUCTION HOUSE by April 21st, 2011. GOOD LUCK!! OK...your question is? You never mentioned the cartridge for which it is chambered. The scope is of little consequence, and adds little if any value to the rifle.

I second what cartod, and rufe are saying. If the gun will indeed letter, then he would already have one, to enhance the value of it.
If you have to ask if it is worth it, to start with, then no...it isn't. When you are dealing with highly collectable things such as this, you have to know your game, and in this case, condition is everything0 -

When ever I have run across a ad like this I get the picture in my mind of some silver tongued devil selling freezers to the Eskimos in Alaska.
I personally don't waste my time pursuing these kind of hot air fantasies. The last time I went out on a newspaper ad like this, was to some BS's house 40 miles away. He advertised a German scope sighted sniper rifle, it was a POS Spanish Mauser with a U.S. mount and scope. When I pointed this out, he got quite indignant and huffy about it, and told me he wasn't interested in doing business with me.0 -

VX II 3x9 is going for +/- $200 used. At Midway they start new at $299.
Looks to me like he has two prices on the gun too!
