Practiced with mine for about 30 years and don't recall ever having a problem. (takes a lot of dry-firing if you're going to be good at "offhand")

Recruits would spend hours snapping in before they ever reached the range and no damage was ever done.

NO, don't do it! It WILL damage the rifle.........after about a gazillion times.

From what little I know about the M1 Garand, NO, you will not damage it. Your trigger finger would wear out and fall off, before that happened.

Dry firing before getting on the line to qualify for my DCM M1 I broke my firing pin. I have to disagree that it will cause no problems. But since I have a combo tool and 14 spare fp's who cares.

I fired on an ROTC Team using the M1 Rifle and later on a USAR team we always dry fired them. We were encouraged to dry more than we did. I never heard any coach, armorer or shooter mention firing pin damage from dry firing. As mentioned above it could happen. I did have an extractor break. The armorer replaced the bolt in about a minute and sent me back to the firing line. No headspace check and no problem.

if in doubt just punch out a empty case primer and fill primer hole with silicone. makes cheap snap cap

For what it's worth, while working to be selected for the team matches in the division matches in the Corps, we did an awful lot of dry firing with NO PROBLEMS. Same as when in boot camp on the range.

    For GOD and COUNTRY

    Not as Lean[:D][:D]Not as Mean[:(!][:(!]But STILL a MARINE[}:)][}:)]
