P-14 rechambering/ rebarrelling to 45-70

Last weekend I bought a demilled Remington P-14 for $50.00. I'm considering rebarrelling/rechambering to 45-70 first because I like that round, second because it would not require any bolt work. The original British 303 chambering had 60.000 maximun C.P.U.'s. The maximum load of 45-70 is only 30.000 to 40.000 C.P.U.'s. It makes plausible and logical sense that it can be done however a few people I have spoken with say it can't be and shouldn't be done because the 45-70 rounds would "stretch the receiver frame". I'm curious. What say you?

    Rim diameter of .45-70 is substantially larger than .303; are you sure it will not require work on the bolt face and extractor?

    Absurd.
    Many P-14s and 1917s have been converted to belted magnums clear up to .458, even larger by A Square. The action is large and strong.

    But how was it demilled? If by attack on the barrel alone, no problem. If they messed with the reciever ring, it could take a lot of work to "remil."

    Second what Hawk says. The reciever that is used most odten for that is the type 66 Siamese Mauser...little to change there. And no, short of something inconcievably stupid in terms of pressure, the 14's and 17's will handle about anything.

    The barrell was demilled! Other people I know have rebarrelled a few lee enfield british 303 rifles to 45-70. They said that most likely that I shouldn't have to rework the bolt because the rim diameters were very close and they did no smithing on the bolts on their reworked lee enfield's. They cycle and feed without any problems.

    the smle's have a 'flat' bolt face, the p-14 has a recessed one. same for the extractor. yes, it can be done but quite a bit of work.

    All that being said, then it would be possible then it would also be possible t rebarrel to some of the older Winchester cartridges that were based on the .45-70 Govt. cartridge? I.E .38-56, .33 WCF, .40-65, .45-60, etc?

    If you can do one, you can do the other.

    If the difference in rim diameter is too much, you can always rebarrel for .45 x 2 1//2" Belted. That is simply the .458 Win Mag loaded with cast bullets.
