browning advice....
was just offered a browning lightweight 12 from an old neighbor of mine who is getting to the age he can't hunt anymore. He has half a dozen brownings and a couple sweet 16s so I know I have seen this one at one time or another. and before you ask NO I cannot post pictures, no camera and the shotgun is still at his house. My question for an average shooter what is a fair price? I don't want to cheat him but also I don't want to get in it for more than it is worth. I think it was his way of telling me he could use some money. He offered it to me for $400 would this be fair to both sides??

Fair would be accepting his offer graciously for his piece of mind. You could also search the listings here and if you see or feel it's worth more, happily tell him you'll give him more. Don't forget to make a point to stop over more often for chat, that's priceless. 0 -

thats just the point lts, when I tried to search completed auctions none came up, I will probubly never shoot the gun and just don't want to put 400 in a 200 dollar gun, but don't want to give him 400 for a 800 dollar gun either, I was just wanting to try and be fair. I have been stopping over every few weeks, he is battling cancer, he sold/gave me a flintlock a few weeks back, I just don't feel right giving him a lot less than its worth.0 -

For an "average gun" 400 dollar is right imo...both ways...no collector value ..just shooters. The Sweet of course will be more even in shooter grade. YMMV 0 -

You won't have to worry about that. Providing the gun is fully functional, and in decent condition, it should be worth almost double the $400.00...at least. If you don't wan't to have something sitting around you will not use, there are several things you can do.
1.) Help him put it on the auction side, and get what it is worth.
2.) Tell him about the auction side, and to stay away from gunshops, because as a general rule, he will not get no where near what it is worth from a gunshop. They have overhead, and have to make money too. They usually start at 50-70% of Blue Book value.
3.) Buy it, and make him happy with the amount he is asking, then you sell it on the auction side.
