Springfield 03

I recently picked up an 03 Springfield whose serial number indicates it was made in 1919. This seems to be a correct gun in all aspects.
However the 4 grouve barrel is dated 1913.
My question is this a replacement barrel or did they make MANY in 1913 and diden't get around to installing some of them until 1919?

    I have heard that actions on springfield 03's with serial
    numbers under 800,000 were brittle and could blow up can these
    actions be rehardened or is it a lost cause

    Chances are a replacement barrel installed during a inspection.

    It would help if you posted the make and the serial number on the action. They were made by both Springfield and Rock-Island. They are both called 1903 Springfields.

    If I had a different make 03 I would not have said SPRINGFIELD 03.
    The auctual serial number is not relevant if you know the DATE it was made. I asked what I thought was a simple question and got some intelligent replys.If you can contribute information thats great and I appreciate it. However lately on this site there seems to be more condescension than than I have seen in the past.

    Most here would not consider a 1919 receiver with a 1913 barrel as "correct". As countryfarmer posted, your barrel is most likely a replacement. Of course, if it is stamped anything other than SA, it is definitely a replacment. But, in answer to your question, it is REMOTELY possible that it is the origional barrel but there is no way to prove it.
